The South-African anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nelson Mandela, also known as Madiba or Tata (Father), faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come out of prison.

IMO B,

(A) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come
-No subject for this "was elected".... parallelism is also missing.

(B) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after coming
Better

(C) who faced several charges during his fight against the government, having spent 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come

(D) faced several charges during his fight against the government while spending 27 years in prison and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came
-both during and while makes no sense.

During his time fighting the gov, He spend years in prison, (Actual intent)
(E) who faced several charges during his fight against the government and spent 27 years in prison, being elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came
-No subject

(B) has faced and spending. Aren't these verbs not parallel? And there is was elected... Faced, spending, was elected all sounds like different tenses to me. Why can't it be faced, spent, and elected? Also how come while spending is wrong? I initially went with D but got it wrong.

In options A & B.
apart from ", and" what is the difference between "he had come" and "after coming"?
