The sponsoring of bodies that govern sports by companies is a common practice. However, the introduction of commercial interests into a sport often leads to reforms in that sport such as changes to the design of uniforms, to the duration of games, and even to the actual rules. For this reason, traditional views are in opposition to the involvement of corporations in sports. Clearly, the objectors of corporate sponsoring have failed to consider the long-lasting subsistence of certain sports because __________.

(A) when the sponsoring corporation of a sport faces an important decision, it gratefully accepts suggestions put forward by fans

(B) many would probably have ceased to exist without the funding provided by corporations

(C) if they had not, they would have realized that sport does not need to be played at a commercial level to be enjoyed

(D) they are less concerned with a sport's character and more concerned with whether a sport will be played in 100 years time

(E) commercializing a game can remove its authentic appeal to spectators

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The sponsoring of bodies that govern sports by companies is a common practice. However, the introduction of commercial interests into a sport often leads to reforms in that sport such as changes to the design of uniforms, to the duration of games, and even to the actual rules. For this reason, traditional views are in opposition to the involvement of corporations in sports. Clearly, the objectors of corporate sponsoring have failed to consider the long-lasting subsistence of certain sports because __________.

(A) when the sponsoring corporation of a sport faces an important decision, it gratefully accepts suggestions put forward by fans

Incorrect.

This is a "Complete the Argument" format question. The missing argument part follows the reason conjunction because, so it's a premise, which supports the conclusion. Therefore, this is a Conclusion Strengthening question:

Premise A: it is common for companies to sponsor sports bodies
+
Premise B: business interests in sports lead to changes in the sport
+
Premise C: traditional sport lovers are opposed to the involvement of businesses in sport because of these changes
=
Conclusion: the traditionalists have neglected the fact that a sport could die out

Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to complete the argument with data that supports the conclusion that traditionalists are not taking a sports long-term existence into account.

Even though, like the conclusion, this answer choice supports the promoters of corporate sponsoring, it doesn't help us validate the conclusion that traditionalists have failed to consider what it takes for certain sports' to continue to exist. Instead, it focuses on the corporations' attitude to fans.

(B) many would probably have ceased to exist without the funding provided by corporations

This answer choice strengthens the conclusion and therefore logically completes the argument. If the people objecting the involvement of corporations in sport had thought about the idea that some sports could have ceased to exist without financial support from such corporations, their views would have been different.

(C) if they had not, they would have realized that sport does not need to be played at a commercial level to be enjoyed

Incorrect.

If anything, this answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. The "individuals" are against the commercialism of sport. Because this statement supports their view, it undermines the conclusion.

(D) they are less concerned with a sport's character and more concerned with whether a sport will be played in 100 years time

Incorrect.

This answer choice cannot logically complete the argument because it contradicts the conclusion: the conclusion (first part of sentence) claims the objectors are said to have neglected sports' long-lasting subsistence, but this answer choice (the missing part) claims the objectors are concerned about whether a sport will be played in 100 years time.

(E) commercializing a game can remove its authentic appeal to spectators

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. If making a certain sport more commercial hurts its appeal, it will probably lead to the failure of a sport. However, this idea opposes that presented by the conclusion - that the sponsors, rather than their objectors, care about the survival of certain sports.
