The sum of the pre-tax costs of Item A and Item B is $300. In Alumba, each item would be charged a fat 7%. In Aplandia, Item A is subject to 5% tax and Item B is subject to 10% tax. If the tax in Aplandia on the purchase of both items is exactly $3 more than it is in Alumba, then what is the pre-tax price of Item A?

Tax in alumba=7% of 300= 21.
Tax in aplandia=21+3=24.
Tax in aplandia= 5% of x + 10% of (300-x)=24
X=120 pre tax cost of item A

Took me about 4:00 min because I had no idea how to algebraicly attack this problem. Testing the answers is a lot easier. You need to get a difference of $3 but plugging in the value of A to get the value of B and then applying the appropriate tax rates. Answer choice E is correct IMO.

A+B= 300 ----- 1
5% of A + 10% of B - 7% of(A+B)=3

-2% of A + 3% of B = 3
3B-2A= 300 ----- 2

Solving eqn 1 and 2, we get A= 120.

or use options, B C D will be eliminated as B will not be a multiple of 3 and as we can see from the option, since price of A is integer, B should also be an integer.

Between A and E, we can test anyone of the given answers.

A=90 then B = 210
Substitute in eqn 2, 630- 180 = 400 something which is not 300 hence E is the correct answer.
