OFFICIAL EPLANATION

The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also 2000 or more than 2000 dead as estimated by the Chinese Red Cross.

A. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also 2000 or more than 2000 dead

This answer choice is stylistically flawed. 2000 or more than 2000 is redundant. Look for a more concise answer choice.

What helps us identify this question as a Redundancy question as well as identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: x or even more than x

B. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left hundreds injured but also at least 2000 dead

Although this answer choice corrects the original Redundancy by deleting or more than 2000, it is grammatically incorrect. But also must be preceded by not only.

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: not only... but also...

C. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also killed at least 2000

Although this answer choice corrects the original Redundancy by deleting or more than 2000, it is grammatically incorrect. The same part of speech that follows not only must also follow but also. In this answer choice, not only is followed by the adjective injured. But also, however, is followed by the verb killed.

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: not only... but also...

D. In 1989, the suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square left not only hundreds injured but also at least 2000 dead

The phrase 2000 or more than 2000 is redundant. This answer choice corrects the Redundancy by using at least while keeping X and Y parallel in the structure not only X but also Y.

E. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but at least 2000 dead

Although this answer choice corrects the original Redundancy by deleting or more than 2000, it is grammatically incorrect. Not only must be followed by but also, not just but.

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: not only... but also...

The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also 2000 or more than 2000 dead as estimated by the Chinese Red Cross.

I agree with the official solution, I want to add few points why I eliminated C. It's easy to narrow down to C & D by eliminating

Idiom errors: not only X but also Y, We can eliminate B,E
Redundancy : 2000 or more than 2000 => at least 2000. I won't eliminate A right away, but I will wait for a better choice.

As C & D are better than A with no idiom errors. We can eliminate A.

Why C need to be eliminated:
Quote:
The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also killed at least 2000

Post removing the prepositional phrase, The sentence will become as below.
The suppression left not only hundreds injured but also killed at least 2000.
=> Highlighted portion is the stem of the parallelism.

So the sentence means :
The suppression left hundreds injured.
The suppression left killed at least 2000. This doesn't make sense. Meaning error.

Whereas in the case of D, the option is clean with no such error.
Quote:
the suppression left not only hundreds injured but also at least 2000 dead
The suppression left hundreds injured.
The suppression left at least 2000 dead.

IMO D

A. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also 2000 or more than 2000 dead

B. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left hundreds injured but also at least 2000 dead

C. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also killed at least 2000

D. In 1989, the suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square left not only hundreds injured but also at least 2000 dead

E. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but at least 2000 dead

"Not only" is followed by "but also".

Eliminate B and E.

C. The suppression of the student demonstrations in Beijing's Tienanmen square in 1989 left not only hundreds injured but also killed at least 2000.

"Hundreds of injured" is not parallel with "killed at least 2000"

Eliminate C.

D is more concise than A.

IMO D
