In your analysis of the different decision points, you should hone in on the difference between “stand”, “stands” and “stood”. Since agreement is typically easier to assess than tense, start with “stand” vs. “stands.” Finding the proper subject is tricky in this example because of the subject-verb inversion in the underlined portion. The “in front of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange” cannot contain the subject as it is simply a collection of prepositional phrases so the subject comes after the verb. Whenever this happens, read the sentence back without the inversion: “both a bronze bull and a bronze bear statue STAND or STANDS in front of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.” Reading it that way you can see that “stands” is incorrect as it is a plural subject so you can eliminate (A) and (C). Now you must consider the past tense “stood,” which is also incorrect. The first part of the sentence uses the present perfect tense, indicating that these attractions still exist now. Using the past tense “stood” means they are not there anymore and this would create an illogical timeline. Therefore (B) and (D) are incorrect, and the correct answer is (E).
