Hi folks,

I'm brainstorming about the third recommendation for HBS and have narrowed it down to one of two folks: a colleague from work and someone I manage at work.

So the question: Who would you pick? :)

I think the person I manage can perhaps offer more insight about my managerial style, mentorship abilities, etc but am concerned that the adcoms may think of it as a non-objective recommendation....My colleague will also give a great recommendation but will speak more about my leadership at work, how I interact with teams, etc.

I'd appreciate your input!
thanks,
ac.

I believe choosing a subordinate is a no-no.

If the issue is objectivity, then maybe a former subordinate is better than a current one (no risk of retaliation if (s)he isn't reporting to you anymore).

I applied to IMD (also requires 3rd recommender) and picked a former colleague who was only 1 level senior to me to show where i started and where i am now, went through a similar professional experience, and now is in a line of business i want to get into and knows what it takes.
