The views and opinions of elected politicians on this crucial global issue are no more significant than the private citizens they claim to represent.
A. than the private citizens - Comparison is made between THOUGHTS of X and Citizens, an incorrect comparison. Hence Incorrect.
B. compared to those of the private citizens - THAN should have been used. Hence Incorrect.
C. in relation to those of the private citizens - THAN should have been used. Hence Incorrect.
D. than those of the private citizens - CORRECT
E. as the private citizen’s views - THAN should have been used. Hence Incorrect.

(D) fits the bill "those of" and "than"
hence D is correct

views and opinions should be compared to the views and opinions of the students,,,

D does the comparison better...

Those correct the comparison issue -> compare views of politicians with views of ppl.
..More....than....is correct usage of idiom.
