Can you guys suggest which was one is correct - "were or was" and why you think it is correct?

Was.

"as well as her husband" is nonessential information (hence the commas), the subject is only "the young bride."

The young bridge was amazed...

was correct.

this the rule

X and Y were amazed by...
X, as well as Y, was amazed by.
(assume that X -singluar subject)
