There are 120 saplings to be planted in an orchard. Ben and Sue working together without a break can complete the job in six hours. How long would it take Ben working alone to complete the job?
(1) Sue plants 3 saplings in the time it takes Ben to plant 2.
(2) Sue working alone would take 10 hours to do the job.
Given information- B and S working together plant 120 saplings in 6 hrs.
Question asked- How long would it take B to complete the job?
(1) Sue plants 3 saplings in the time it takes Ben to plant 2.
This statement tells that ratio of S:B= 3:2
In 6 hrs S will plant= 120*3/5
and, B will plant= 120 *2/5
When we know that B plants 120 *2/5 saplings in 6 hrs, we can calculate how many hrs will he take to plant 120 saplings.
(2) Sue working alone would take 10 hours to do the job.
Pretty straight!
1/B+1/S= 1/6
1/B+1/10=1/6
We can find the value of B
D is the answer
