There are 6 floors in an apartment building. The mean number of residents in each apartment in the building is 2.3. How many apartments are in the building?

(1) On each floor, the number of apartments is between 2 and 4 inclusive.

(2) The total number of residents in the block is greater than 40

Since, the total number of residents has to be an integer, we can limit our thinking process to no of apartments that will produce an integer when multiplied with 2.3.

1) Lowest no of apartments = 12 and highest number of apartments = 24. Only one value,20, will produce an integer. So, there must be 20 apartments in the building.

2) If there are 46 residents, then there are 20 flats, but if there are 69 residents, there has to be 30 apartments. Not sufficient.

A is the answer.
