Let the total number of boys be \( b \) and the total no. of girls be \( g \).
Equate (1) and (2),
- If each child sits on one chair, one boy will have no chair to sit.
So, the total no. of chairs \(= b + g - 1\) - (1)
- If two boys sit on one chair and one girl occupies one chair, then three chairs are unoccupied.
So, the total no. of chairs \(= b/2 + g + 3\) - (2)
Equate (1) and (2),
- => \(b+g-1=\frac{b}{2}+g+3\)
- => \(\frac{b}{2}=4 \)
- => \(b=8.\) (C)

This problem is worded very obtusely.
The only reason to say that a "boy" would have no place to sit, rather than a "child" , is if boys and girls had seats assigned by gender.
