There are two parallel chords in a circle with radius 5 cm. If the length of the longer chord is 8 cm and the length of shorter chord is 6 cm. Find the perpendicular distance between the two chords.

Let AB and CD be the two chords of the circle.
OX, the perpendicular on chord AB, bisects that chord.
AX = XB = 4 cm
OY, the perpendicular on chord CD, bisects that chord.
CY = YD = 3 cm
The two triangles OXB and OYC so formed are right angled triangle with the radius of the circle as hypotenuse.
Using the Pythagorean triplets we can find the value of OX and OY.
Distance between the chords = OX + OY = 7 cms
