Answer should be "E" - The stem has flow of maintaining different tenses through out the sentence, Rather it also fails to describe the sequence of an actions happened. Moreover, the oriniginal sentence has "its" which wrongly refers to plural noun "strike Marks" The choice "E" maintains the Perfect Present tense through out the sentence as well as provide correct usage of parallel structure "the engine, the strike marks, and the cause".
