KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:
Slowing the deterioration and improving are already parallel in the original sentence, but they're not in (B), so eliminate that option. (C) gives you a parallel structure, but it distorts the meaning of the original sentence and makes no sense in the context of the rest of the sentence. (D) is unidiomatic since it describes the improvement to rather than the improvement of memory. The only difference between (A) and (E) is the of following deterioration. Of is necessary because it completes the first phrase (slowing the deterioration of... memory). (E) it is.
An 800 test taker realizes that she may need to make a sentence wordier in order to make it correct. The shortest option is not always the best option.
