I don't think E is correct, I have the same feeling than forestgump :
I think that in E it can be confusing because the meaning could be "destroying...the growth of"
it's clear that you can destroy cells but you can't destroy any growth :-D

this is why I would pick A

E must be it. Here is how you must look at E:

There is no agreement on what role, if any, is played by diet in
1- destroying [pre-cancerous cells in a benign brain tumor]
or
2- slowing the growth of pre-cancerous cells in a benign brain tumor.

In brackets for #1 is the object of the verb "destroying" and you can see how it perfectly connect to each of the verbs "destroying" and "slowing"

This is what A erroneously does:

There is no agreement on what role, if any, is played by diet in
1- slowing the growth [pre-cancerous cells in a benign brain tumor]
or
2- destroying pre-cancerous cells in a benign brain tumor.

Do you see that #2 is alright but #1 misses "of" to properly connect the object and make it the preposition of noun "growth"?

E it is.
Paul is right in money.
We need "of" which is missing from A.
This is very similar to OG SC (damagining and destroying trees..)

Definitely E without any doubt. Even though 'A' maintains parallelism, it is not correct. E is the pick.
