Those who think globalization is a great American conspiracy aimed at pauperizing the impoverished Third World may pause and take a look at Company Town, USA, where a tumult is brewing over what free trade is doing to Americans. In the past few months, the small town and suburban America has been shorn of thousands of jobs. Some are going to China, but most are just being squeezed out as American companies, having partied till the onset of the new millennium, are now getting tough.

Which of the following is an assumption made in the above passage:

(A) Globalization implies a smaller workforce.
(B) Globalization has caused loss of jobs in America.
(C) New jobs in China have come at the cost of jobs in America.
(D) American companies do not need to globalize but only do so to reduce costs.

OA is (B). Can someone explain...it is clearly 'mentioned' that Globalization has resulted in job losses. So, how is it an 'assumption'?

I choose B.

Mohish...the arguement never states that globalization has resulted in job losses. That is in fact, the unstated assumption in the argument making B correct.

The article says...

- USA is globalized
- Thoudsnds of jobs disappeared in USA
- Some of the jobs moved to China
- Most of the jobs are squeezed out as American companies are getting tough

The negation test will help.

(B) Globalization has caused loss of jobs in America.

(B') Globalization has not caused loss of jobs in America.

If, according to (B'), the loss of jobs is not due to globalization, the whole article loses its point and nobody knows why is the author talking about 'globalization' and 'loss of jobs in the states'.

B for me. It is referring that Globalization causes the loss of jobs in America also, not only 3rd world countries.
