Though renowned by 19th century US generals for their tactical prowess and tenacity in battle, few people are now aware that the Apache had already established a fearsome military reputation after their successful 17th century attacks on the Spanish settlements of Sonora.
a) few people are now aware that the Apache had already established - Apache were renowned by US generals & not few people. Thus incorrect modifier use.
b) few people are now aware that the Apache have already established - Same error as in A; moreover, Use of HAVE is incorrect. It should be HAD
c) it is worth noting that the Apache already established - Modified noun should appear at the start of the sentence.
d) the Apache had earlier established themselves - "Earlier" changes the intended meaning of the sentence. It means that Apache were recognized earlier but they are not recognized now.
e) the Apache, as few people now realize, had already established - Correct

Hope it helps.

Hii Fame.
In D, can't we consider "had" and "earlier" redundant. Both imply the same time sequencing as suggested by the latter part of the sentence.
Moreover, can you shed some more light on the meaning aspect in D.
Regards.

Hi Marcab,
In option D, EARLIER changes the meaning of the sentence more than it indicates the time sequence. So basically it is meaning issue rather than redundancy.

Original meaning - "Apache had established a fearsome military reputation after their successful 17th century attacks" & they still have the same reputation as recognized people (in the current time)
Changed meaning - "Apache had established a fearsome military reputation after their successful 17th century attacks" BUT they do not have the same reputation as of now (in the current time)

- This pen is a bargain because it is only ten cents.
What this means is that "Pen is ten cents"
How can a Pen be Ten cents?
Pen can COSTS ten cents

Similarly use of THEMSELVES is also incorrect in option D & such use is completely Illogical.
- the Apache had established themselves a fearsome military reputation

What this means is that "Apache is a Reputation"
Tell me, do you really think Apache is a kind of Reputation.

I hope this explanation dispels your confusion.

option D can be eliminated for another reason as well.
it no more mentions that people now realize.

hope this reasoning is correct.

Though renowned by 19th century US generals for their tactical prowess and tenacity in battle, few people are now aware that the Apache had already established a fearsome military reputation after their successful 17th century attacks on the Spanish settlements of Sonora.

It is trying to establish a contrast in terms of some people knowing the reputation vs not. Hence something that makes the meaning clearer will be right

a) few people are now aware that the Apache had already established - 'now are aware' would be irrelevant
b) few people are now aware that the Apache have already established- 'have....established' would mean AP exist even now
c) it is worth noting that the Apache already established - tense error
d) the Apache had earlier established themselves - 'we are talking about their reputation not the AP themselves'
e) the Apache, as few people now realize, had already established - correct tense and meaning; also right placement of nouns (Apache) after the first sentence, and then the further modifier of how 'few..realize..established'

"Though renowned by 19th century US generals for their tactical prowess and tenacity in battle" must modify "the Apache " => Eliminate A/B/C
D changes intended meaning by saying that the Apache “establish themselves a reputation”
Hence E is the correct choice.
