Three brothers – Maurice, Larry and Curly – bought their parents an anniversary gift that cost $180. How much did Curly contribute to the purchase price?

(1) Maurice paid twice as much as the average (arithmetic mean) contributed by all three brothers.
(2) Larry paid one-third of the average amount contributed by his brothers.

Let, contribution of Maurice, Larry and Curly be m,l, and c.
So, m+l+c=180.
We have to find c.

(1) m=2(m+l+c)/3
=>m=2(180/3)
m=120.
However, we have no information on c and l.
Thus, insufficient.

(2) l=1/3((m+c)/2)
=> l=1/6(m+c)
=>6l=m+c
=> 6l+l=180
From the above equation, value of l can be found.
However, we have no information on m and c.
Thus, insufficient.

From (1) and (2) together, we have value of m and l, so value of c can be found.
Thus, sufficient.

Therefore, the correct answer is option C.

(2) Larry paid one-third of the average amount contributed by his brothers.
\(L = \frac{1}{3}*\frac{(M + L + C)}{3} = \frac{1}{3}*\frac{180}{3} = 20\)

Quote:
2. 3L=\(\frac{M+L+C}{3}\)-> 8L=M+C-> M=8L−C

Dillesh4096 and pushpitkc

In (2), according to me, \(L = \frac{1}{3}*\frac{(M + C)}{2}\)

Let me know what you guys think.
