Three individuals contributed $800 each toward the purchase of a computer. If they bought the computer on sale for $1,950 plus 10 percent sales tax, how much money should be refunded to each individual?

This is an easy question on percentages.
The total cost of the computer is equal to the sum of its price and the sales tax. The total contribution is three times each individual’s contribution.
Total contribution = 3 * 800 = $2,400.
Total cost of the computer = 1,950 + 195 (10% of 1950) = $2,145.
Therefore, total amount refunded = 2,400 – 2,145 = $255.
Remember that 255 is the total amount refunded. We are trying to find out how much was refunded to EACH individual. Therefore, 255 has to be divided into three equal parts. This will give us $85.
$85 was refunded to each individual. The correct answer option is B.
