Q: what was the Length of the Race?

Let L = the Length of the race

first, it is helpful to keep in mind that we have 2 instances of time given.

(1st)A will finish the Race.

A is 12 m. ahead of B when A finishes ---- (B has traveled a distance of: L - 12)

A is 18 m ahead of C when A finishes ------ (C has traveled a distance of: L - 18)

at this instant, B is ahead of C by 6 meters


(2nd)now B will finish the race - B had 12 meters more to run

B finishes the race 8 meters ahead of C



over the course of the 12 meters B ran -----------> B increased the lead over C by (8 - 6) = 2 meters


............................................................................................................................*4


when B runs entire L of track ------------------> B has an overall increased lead over C = 8 meters


thus, in order for B to put an overall Increased Lead over C = 8 meters

B must have run: (12) *4 = 48 meters

Probably the simplest of the explanation thank you KarishmaB

My logic was, 2 mtrs of gap created in every 12 meters of distance, hence for 6 mtrs of gap (that is 3 times of such 2mtrs gap) and each with the constant speed and starting at the same point, we can infer that it would have required another 12*3=36 mtrs + final 12 mtrs =48 mtrs in total.

See if you can logically deduce the answer:
This is what happens in the race.

..._________C___(6)___B_______(12)________A (Finishing Point)

..._____________________C_______(8)______B (Finishing Point)

Focus on B and C.
B and C had a distance of 6 m between them. When B finished the race by covering another 12 m, he created a gap of 8 m between them i.e. he created another 2 m gap while running 12 m.
Since he created a gap of 2 m by running 12 m, he must have created a gap of 8 m by running a total of 12*4 = 48 m
