I sat for the gmat a few days ago. My verbal score usually hovers around 40, and I felt like I was doing even better this time through the first 10 questions. But by the end of the test, I had gotten three science passages, including one for the longer passage. I had never experienced getting more than one or maybe two science type situations. This ended up slowing me down a good bit, I ran short on time, and guessed on the last 5 questions. My score came out as V34.
By doing well in the beginning, did I set myself up for more difficult reading comp. passages? Or are reading topics completely random?

The reading topics are completely random, usually there is a mix of topics that appear on the test.
You should actually do well in the start of the test to build a solid foundation for the score. The better you do in the first 10 questions, the better your score would be.

While it's not too common, Test Takers CAN see 3 RC passages on Test Day (especially if you're performing well at certain points during the Verbal section). It's interesting that you're attributing your pacing problem to RC - unless you pay for the Enhanced Score Report, we won't have any proof that that's actually the case (you might have had bigger pacing issues in SC and CR). There are also other factors that could have influenced your pacing/endurance/fatigue on Test Day besides those 3 RC passages.
1) How did you score overall (and what was your Quant Scaled Score)?
2) What was your goal score?
3) Are you planning to retake the GMAT?
