Work = (A)(B)/(A+B) where A and B are the times that it takes each of the two individual entities to complete the job on their own. Since we're given the result of the equation, we can set up the calculation as follows:
(12)(B)/(12 + B) = 8
Then we just have to do the algebra to solve for B...
12B = 96 + 8B
4B = 96
B = 24
Thus, it would take B 24 hours to dig the trench on his own.
