Two persons a and b working together can dig a trench in 8 hours , while a alone can dig it in 12 hours in how many hours can b alone dig such a trench?

Since this question involves two entities working on a job together, we can use the Work Formula to answer it:
Work = (A)(B)/(A+B) where A and B are the times that it takes each of the two individual entities to complete the job on their own. Since we're given the result of the equation, we can set up the calculation as follows:
(12)(B)/(12 + B) = 8
Then we just have to do the algebra to solve for B...
12B = 96 + 8B
4B = 96
B = 24
Thus, it would take B 24 hours to dig the trench on his own.
