I've got the GMAT in about a month and I've taken three practice tests so far. My performance has been about where the forums would predict, buy my timing is all over the map. Here's what I got:
Test 1: Kaplan CAT
Overall: 670 (Q44, V42)
I finished the math with about 15 minutes to spare and the verbal with about 20 minutes to go. I decided to focus on slowing down.
Test 2: MGMAT CAT
Overall: 680 (Q46 V37)
I finished the math with about 30s to spare and actually had to guess randomly on the last verbal question to finish the test.
Test 3: OG CAT
Overall: 740 (Q49 V42)
I finished the math with about 4 minutes to spare, but I had 15 minutes left on the verbal when I finished.
I seem to be getting a feel for the natural timing in the math section (though from the looks of it, I can slow down just a bit and spend a few more minutes tackling the really tough problems), but I'm all over the map on the verbal. I think that part of the variation is due to the length of the RC passages, but I won't know beforehand how long the passages are and I don't want to be rushed on the last few problems.
I've got about a month to fix this. Has anyone else had similar problems? Advice on how to be more consistent in timing?

hi,
i dont have any specifics as to how to improve timing, other than to make a conscious effort to slow down (which you seem to have tried), and also to take many tests. i took about 4 full length tests during my last week of studying. i didn't get the timing right until the very last test i took (the day before the exam), when i finally finished the verbal with about 1 min to spare. in all my previous tests, i had about 7-10 mins to spare.
my suggestion would be to keep taking full length tests, maybe one every few days, and keep trying to slow down on verbal. i was able to improve my verbal score significantly in this way (my verbal practice test scores were in the V39 - V44 range).
if you dont already have the 6 full length MGMAT tests, you can get them by purchasing one of their section guides. i purchased the MGMAT sentence correction guide on amazon for about $25, and it came with 6 free tests, so i'd recommend you look into this if you havent already.

Thanks, shadowsjc. I guess the thing that I need to figure out on verbal is where I can slow down. I think, timewise, I'm fine on SC (if anything I'm going a little too slowly). I fly through the critical thinking, and with reading comprehension it depends on the passage. A couple of the ones that I had on the practice GMAT were only about a paragraph long, while Kaplan and MGMAT both had 4-5 paragraph essays.
