Hi All,
As I get settled in to start b-school, I just wanted to share a quick tip that I'd like to share with prospective international students who might want a US credit card when they arrive here (hopefully) next year.
Getting a credit card in the US is hard if you are an international student with no US credit history. Most banks will only give you one if you give them a deposit equal to your credit limit. And even then, the card that they'll give you will be very basic, with none of the perks that other cards have (e.g. cashback, airline miles, travel insurance, etc).
So, the answer?
Apply for an American Express card now. If you have held an Amex card in your home country for one year, they will give you pretty much any US card in their product line (including all the ones with perks like cashback / points etc) while you are studying here. No deposit, no fuss. I had to submit my application online, it was (unsurprisingly) rejected immediately, then one phone call to membership services and they 'un-rejected' it for me. It's that simple.
For more info see:
https://www.americanexpress.com/globalt ... s_en.shtml(edit: on this page it says that you need a SSN. If you explain that you're a student, they'll waive this requirement, as they know you won't have one.)
Hope this helps some people.
(PS: If you are in the UK, send me a DM and I can do a referral for you. We'll both get £25 if you're accepted.)
