Hi There,

Good work on that first GMAT. What section went down on the retake? If you need verbal practice I would look into using LSAT materials. Have you worked through question pack 1? It's a good resource for both verbal and quant. For quant only, GMAT focus would be worth doing the week before your exam.

Happy Studies,

A.

Thanks for the insight. All sections went down during the retake. I wasn't on top of my game. I plan on going through question pack 1, as well as exam pack 2. Can you shed some more light on GMAT focus? What is the rationale for using this tool one week out from the exam? Also, I see that there is a "single use" and a "bundle of 3" option. I see that if I take the exam more than 4 times, then I will see repeat questions. Does that mean that I should buy a "bundle of 3" and a "single use" to maximize the number of new questions?

Hi Ricky8908,

Before you rush back in to retake the GMAT, we should probably analyze your situation in a bit more detail:

1) What was your score on this recent GMAT (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) How long did you study before taking this GMAT?

3) How long did you study before taking the GMAT and scoring 730?
4) In what year did you score the 730?

5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

You're welcome! The last week of GMAT prep isn't the time for full practice tests. They can be a bit too much of an energy drain. But it is great to keep up with tough, timed, official practice. The GMAT focus quizzes are just that. 45 minutes, computer adaptive, official questions. They are great for staying sharp that last week without burning out. I'd go for the bundle of three. That should be sufficient. If you feel that you need another one you can buy it separately once you exhaust the bundle.

Happy studies,

A.

Thanks for chiming in Rich. I'm in no rush to retake the GMAT. However, note that I am performing at the level I want to be performing at on the CATs. Test day nerves, however, got the best of me.

1) 47Q 39V
2) 2-3 months

3) 2-3 months
4) 2013

5) 2-3 years
6) M7, H/S preferred

Hi Ricky8908,

With the Scaled Scores you listed, was your Overall Score around a 680/690? That score is still a fantastic performance, so it could very well be enough to get you into your first-choice Business School. With highly competitive Schools (such as the M7 Schools), you have to remember that you need a strong OVERALL profile AND you need to 'market yourself' correctly to each of the individual Schools that you apply to. Having a higher GMAT score won't matter much if your profile is lacking in other key areas. All that having been said, you have LOTS of time remaining before you apply to School, so you can absolutely improve on this recent performance and strengthen your overall profile. With your skills, you could easily retest in a month and hit your goal score.

At your current scoring 'level', the GMAT becomes really 'sensitive' to little mistakes; if you make too many, then a 700+ score becomes simply impossible to achieve. With your Scaled Scores, you don't have any obvious 'weak spots' in either the Quant or Verbal sections. However, with a Q47, you likely missed out on a bunch of 'strategy-based' points, so you might want to focus on those areas as you continue to study.

Thanks for the encouragement Rich. Yes, my overall score was 680/690. Also, what do you mean when you mention 'strategy-based' points?

Hi Ricky8908,

At its core, the GMAT is a 'critical thinking' Test. As such, the Quant section of the GMAT isn't really a 'math test' (not in the way that you're probably used to thinking about these things). Quant questions are designed so that they can be solved in a variety of ways (and a 'math-heavy' approach can often take longer than other types of approaches). Depending on how you studied, you might already know some of these Tactics, but with a Q47 you don't appear to be using them (either often-enough or correctly-enough). If you're open to learning and practicing new Tactics, then you could conceivably pick up a bunch of Quant points in a month (or less).

Thanks Rich. I agree that the Quant section, to a great degree, focuses on Tactics and strategy rather than simple number crunching. Can you point me to where I can learn these Tactics?

Hi Ricky8908,

Based on everything that you've described, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Quant Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients complete that Study Plan in under a month, so the time commitment wouldn't be too intense. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.
