Can someone please evaluate this? Thanks!Prompt:“To reverse the deterioration of the postal service, the government should raise the price of postage stamps. This solution will no doubt prove effective, since the price increase will generate larger revenues and will also reduce the volume of mail, thereby eliminating the strain on the existing system and contributing to improved morale.”
Response:The argument suggests that government should raise the price of the postage stamps to reverse the deterioration of the postal service. I find the argument unconvincing for the following reasons.
The argument is based on the claim that increasing the price of the postage stamps will lead to higher revenue and lower volume of mail. This statement, however, is contradicting itself. Higher priced postage stamps will generate a larger revenue per mail, this increase could be balanced out by the decrease in the people using postal service. The argument fails to provide sufficient evidence to refute this scenario.
The argument also assumes that eliminating the strain on the existing system would result in improved morale. The argument considers the the reduced mail volume for a deteriorating a system a good thing. Decreasing the business for an already deteriorating system could backfire and further decrease the morale. It is true that morale could increase if the workload of the employees is too large, but the argument fails to clarify this and hence is unconvincing.
If the argument needs to include certain statistics regarding the effects of increased revenue and decreased mail volume, and the current morale and workload of the employees to overcome the flaws and become more convincing.
