Competition Mode Question

Toby has breakfast at Good Eats Diner every morning before work. He always orders the same thing: two eggs over easy with three strips of extra crispy bacon, unbuttered wheat toast, and a large coffee. Today, he ordered a bagel with light cream cheese and a large orange juice. Something must be wrong with Toby.

All of the following, if true, are also plausible explanations for Tobys behavior EXCEPT

A. Toby has decided to limit the cholesterol in his diet.
B. a new cook started at Good Eats today.
C. Toby simply wanted a change of pace.
D. Toby has gone on a diet.
E. Toby has decided to become a vegetarian.

Let's jot down the points:
Premise: T has breakfast @ GED every morning and orders same food
Premise: Today, T ordered different food.
Conclusion: Something not right about T

All of the following, if true, are also plausible explanations for Toby's behavior EXCEPT -> we need to find why Toby changed his diet. $ options would give the explanation so the 5th option-the odd one out option will be the answer.

A. Toby has decided to limit the cholesterol in his diet.
INCORRECT. This resolves the paradox. He changed the diet because he wanted to control cholesterol. Notice that he changed his diet to low fat and healthy liquids.

B. a new cook started at Good Eats today.
CORRECT. Just because a new cook came at GED does not resolve the paradox about his changing diet. What is this sentence trying to say? That Toby eats only from the old usual cook who used to make his usual order? Or that he doesn't trust the new guy? Or the new cook doesn't know how to cook Toby's usual order because of which he was forced to order different? Any and many question arises and thus, this doesn't resolve paradox. [You can also find the answer by POE.]

C. Toby simply wanted a change of pace.
INCORRECT. This is again a possible reason why he changed his diet. Probably he got bored with his usual diet and thus, changed his diet. This resolves the paradox.

D. Toby has gone on a diet.
INCORRECT. Similar explanation like option A.

E. Toby has decided to become a vegetarian.
INCORRECT. Again a possible reason to resolve the paradox. Notice the before and after diet food.

--->The paradox in here is Toby's changes in breakfast choices. The correct answer for paradox argument helps to reconcile 2 different perspectives with new info, and this type of question should be treated as strengthen question.

Pre-think: there should be some changes in staff at the breakfast point because Toby always goes there, the adv "always" reveals the flaw here.

Additionally, the question asks for the EXCEPT answer choice, because of that the correct answer is completely different with the rest of other answer choices.

A. Toby has decided to limit the cholesterol in his diet.--->It sounds logic because of the breakfast portion and preferences.

B. a new cook started at Good Eats today.--->It seemingly looks like what we pre-think, and it is different than the rest of other options--->This is the correct asnwer.

C. Toby simply wanted a change of pace.---->It sounds logic in terms of the breakfast portion.

D. Toby has gone on a diet.--->It sounds logic, too.

E. Toby has decided to become a vegetarian.---->It sounds logic, too.

ARGUMENT
[premise] Toby always orders the same thing: eggs + bacon + toast + coffee;
[premise] However, TODAY, he ordered something else: LIGHT cream and juice;
[conclusion] Thus, something must be wrong with Toby;
[assumption] Something must have happened BEFORE TODAY that changed Toby's order.

A. "has decided" this happened before today, plausible.
C. "wanted a change of pace" this happened before today, plausible.
D. "has gone on a diet" this happened before today, plausible.
E. "has decided" this happened before today, plausible.

Answer (B): "a new cook started…today" this happened TODAY.

Option A, C, D, and E are connected to Toby except option B which is related to cook.

Certainly B is correct choice.

Official Explanation

Correct Answer: B

Perhaps something was wrong with Toby, causing him to deviate from his normal course of action, but there are many other plausible explanations, including his decision to avoid foods high in cholesterol (choice a), a simple desire for a change of pace (choice c), a decision to go on a diet and eat foods lower in fat (choice d), or a decision to eat only vegetarian foods (choice e).
