Today Dave drove from home to work at twice his regular speed and arrived at work 16 minutes earlier than he regularly arrives. If Dave regularly drives at a constant speed of 40 miles per hour, what is the distance, in miles, from Dave’s home to work?

Dave's regular driving speed = 40 mph
Dave's driving speed TODAY = 80 mph

Let d = the distance from Dave's home to work

Dave arrived at work 16 minutes earlier than he regularly arrives.
We can write: regular travel time in hours - 16/60 hours = today's travel time in hours

time = distance/rate, which means we can write: d/40 - 16/60 hours = d/80
Rewrite each fraction with denominator 240 to get: 6d/240 - 64/240 hours = 3d/240
Multiply both sides of the equation by 240 to get: 6d - 64 = 3d
Subtract 6d from both sides: -64 = -3d
Divide both sides by -3 to get: 64/3 = d

Answer: D

Difference in time is = 16/60 hrs
T(regular) – T(Today ) = 16/60 hrs
T(regular) = dist/speed = d/40
T(today)= dist/speed = d/80

Subtract both and equal to 16/60 hrs
d/40 – d/80 = 16/60

ANS= 64/3 Miles

Here's an easier approach:

If the driver drives at twice his regular speed then he would reach twice as fast. With this info we get:

Today's speed: 80 mph; Today's time: 16 minutes (or 16/60 hours)
Regular speed: 40 mph; Regular time: 32 minutes (32/60 hours)

Now get the distance using either one of them using formula d = speed*time.

\(d = 40*\frac{32}{60}­\)­

Since distance on both days is same
S1t1=S2t2
We are given relationships between s1 and t1
Using them in the equation we get,
2S1(t-16)=s1.t
solve this and get t=32 minutes
Now, we are given S=40miles/hour
So Using D=S x T
D= 40 X 32/60(convert minutes to hours)
D=64/3

S=D/T
16mins=16/60 hours

So 40T=80(T-(16/60))
40T=80/60(60T-16)
30T=60T-16
T=16/30
So Now D=ST, Therefore
D=40*(16/30)

Therefore (D)
