After months of procrastination, I finally buckled down and signed up for the test. I probably first cracked open a book in Dec. 05, and from then until July only studied intermittently due to work obligations. Started studying intently in August to take the test at the end of Sept.
I have a quant background (studied computer science in college), so I was not as worried about studying for the quant. However, the DS section required a lot of getting used to. I was also confident about the CR questions. That left SC, and RC. I didn't think there was much that could be done about RC, so about 80% of my studying was for SC. Honestly, I think I worried about the SC more than it deserved.
The test went about as smoothly as I could have planned. I took today and yesterday off from work, and got a good nights sleep. I arrived early at the test center, which was not crowded at all, and got a nice corner seat. I found my AWA topics very straightforward, and had a goot amount of material to write. I took my break, took a sip of water, and returned for the quant section. I was worried about not missing any of the first questions, so I spent a good amount of time double and triple checking the questions. Surprisingly, I didn't get too difficult DS questions. The one that I had a problem with was similar to one posted on this board, so I felt good about it. I finished with just a minute or two left, and took my second break.
The verbal section started out a bit shaky. I felt really bad about the 3rd question (is "riding a bike, swimming, or scuba diving" plural?). Anyway, I tried not to keep thinking about potentially missing an early question. The reading comprehensions were great - all social issue ones and no scientific ones which I find difficult to read. By the last 10 questions on the verbal I felt really good, and was excited being on the home stretch. My timing was surprisingly good, and I had a good half hour for the last 10 questions. I took my time, and finished the exam leaving 6 minutes on the clock.
I was hoping to see the score immediately, but had to go through a bunch of screens that repeated info I filled out online already. Finally, I hit the score screen and got my Q51, and V47 scores. Both 99 percentile! I didn't find this board until a couple weeks ago, but gained a lot of confidence seeing hte varying q/v scores that result in a 700+ score. It also helped me resolve some loose ends.
Resources I used:
OG 11th
Official Quant review
Offical Verbal review
Kaplan GMAT book
Kaplan Verbal guide
Kaplan Quant guide
MGMAT Sentence Corrections guide
My scores in practices were:
Kaplan CAT 590 (didn't pay attention to the time at all)
Kaplan CAT 660
Kaplan CAT 670
GMATPrep #1 770
GMATPrep #1 780
As others have stated, the best resources are the official guides and GMATPrep software. I found the Kaplan tests difficult because they are purposely obfuscated - the reading comprehension examples are unreadable. I'm pretty sure I could never score over 700 on a Kaplan exam - they just don't make sense half the time. The GMATPrep software was exactly as the real one is, so it got me comfortable with the format. I found the sample exams more difficult than the real thing for quant, but the verbal was comparable.
Good luck to those who are looking to take the test soon.
I have a headache.
