I think all 2010 applicants are going to have a tough road to hoe. I guess that's what business is all about.

One of the main reasons I'm applying next year, not this year...

There will always be a "record number" of applicants for top schools.

During a recession, everyone wants to go to a top school to either (1) prepare themselves for the next boom and/or (2) because they got laid off

During a boom, everyone wants to go to a top school because they see how much money all the MBA grads from the top schools are making.

It just never ends....

False.

Top b-schools saw declining admissions ~2006 when job opportunities and salaries were looking especially solid. Some schools even cut their class sizes to maintain the same high standards they held for students during years when more apps were coming in.

To be honest, what worries me about the US is that it may start to resemble the 1970's scene.

Ok, after fact-checking, I see that it was 2007 that saw a decline in app volume. That's why I said "~2006."

I was mistaken - 2003 to 2005 saw a decrease, so it was when we were coming out of the tech crash.

My sense is that we are probably going to see some divergence -- the top 10-15 schools will keep their enrollment levels steady/up but there will be movement to 1 year or on-line programs. The key will be career trajectory -- if there are some career end states that can be reached via more focused programs that are 30-40% less cost, we will see some movement to that model. But time will tell!
