Re: Correlated Locations and Prices [#permalink]
pqhai wrote:
First of all, the intended meaning is key for this question. The intended meaning should be the location of a house correlates with its price more than the quality of construction correlates with price. We are not comparing "price" with "quality of construction". Let imagine, "price" is the goal. The location affects more to "price" than the quality of construction does. Thus, auxiliary verb - does - is necessary to make the sentence clear in meaning.

According to a recent study of home buyers, the location of a house correlates more with its price than with its quality of construction.

A) the location of a house correlates more with its price than with its quality of construction.
Wrong. "price" vs "quality of construction" <== wrong meaning.

B) the location of a house correlates more with its price as does its quality of construction.
Wrong. "more....as" is incorrect grammar.

C) the location of a house correlates more with its price than does its quality of construction.
Correct. As stated above.

D) the price of a house correlates more to its location than does its quality of construction.
Wrong. The meaning is the price correlates to location than the quality of construction correlates to location? Does not make sense.

E) the location of a house correlates more to its price than to its quality of construction.
Wrong. Same as A. the location does not correlate to the quality of construction.

Hope it helps.

Hit the nail right on head there. Excellent!

D) the price of a house correlates more to its location than does its quality of construction.
E) the location of a house correlates more to its price than to its quality of construction.

This question really testes the meaning
Authors Implies
Price of a house depends on both Location of the house and the construction quality of the house.
But
Price depends more on location than on construction quality.

This is correctly implied only in (C)
the location of a house correlates more with its price than does its quality of construction.

Hi
Your explanation is neat and sweet. You deserve kudos for making life simple. To add a little more side dish to your core thesis, let me add.
First POE:
Let me remove D and E for using the wrong idiom’ correlates to’ rather than the customary ‘correlates’ with”
Let me also eliminate B for using the wrong comparison idiom ‘more with its price as does'.
Now between A and C

A) The location of a house correlates more with its price than with its quality of construction.
C) the location of a house correlates more with its price than does its quality of construction
The comparison here is between what the location correlates (an action) with what the other factor does. Hence, we require the action verb ‘does’ in the second arm. Therefore, C wins

Comparison is between location of house and quality of construction and not between price and quality.
This leaves us with B and C.
C changes meaning. Hence, C is OA.

‘more…as’ is ungrammatical, so B is wrong. D changes the meaning to say that price correlates to location than the quality of construction correlates to location. This makes zero sense. E and A have the same problem. They relate the location to the quality of construction.

So C is the correct option.

The location correlates more with price than with quality

B) the location of a house correlates more with its price as does its quality of construction.

More ...as... is in correct
Quote:
C) the location of a house correlates more with its price than does its quality of construction.

The location correlates more with price than quality correlates with price
Quote:
D) the price of a house correlates more to its location than does its quality of construction.

"Correlate to" is an incorrect usage of Idiom
Quote:
E) the location of a house correlates more to its price than to its quality of construction.

"Correlate to" is an incorrect usage of Idiom

A & C are grammatically correct. Hence, contenders. The difference between A and C comes down to the meaning. Logically, It should be that, in C, the location of a house correlates more with its price than its quality of construction correlates with its price. A is saying that the location correlates wth its quality of construction; This does not really make sense.

(C) is the correct choice.

I kinda hate this one because I failed to understand the difference between X correlating to Y and Y correlating to X. I assume these two mean the same. Hence location correlating to price would mean the same as price correlating to location. Experts please reply.

Official Explanation:

Answer: C

(A) To get this right, it is very important to understand the meaning implied by the original sentence. The sentence basically states that the price of a house depends more on its location than on its quality of construction. Obviously, A is then incorrect because it correlates the location with the quality of construction whereas both of these factors have to actually correlate with the price.

(B) The use of more necessitates the use of than and not as.

(C) The correct answer. It basically states that the location correlates more with the price than does the quality (correlate with the price).

(D) Incorrectly correlates the location with the quality of construction. Also, the correct idiom is correlate with.

(E) The correct idiom is correlate with. Also this sentence has the same meaning problem as did option A.
