Quote:
The increased concentration of salt in the bay, which is the result of recent drought and high temperatures, will cause many fish to die. Shrimp, however, can tolerate high salt levels; the shrimp industry will not, therefore, be hurt by the increased concentration of salt.

Which of the following statements, if true, would weaken the argument above?

A. Some fish will migrate to areas that have lower concentrations of salt.

B. Lack of rainfall for extended periods of time lowers the water level of bays.

C. The organisms on which young shrimp feed cannot survive in such salty waters.

D. Increased water temperature often causes shrimp to multiply more quickly.

E. Shrimp are more abundant in areas of the bay that are sparsely populated by fish.

Premise: The increased concentration of salt in the bay will cause many fish to die.
Premise: The increase in salt is due to a recent drought and high temperatures.
Premise: Shrimp can tolerate high salt levels.
Conclusion: The shrimp industry will not be hurt by the increased concentration of salt.

We’re looking to weaken the argument.

A. Irrelevant. We’re concerned with the shrimp industry, not some random other fish.
B. This one is a bit tempting, because less water seems bad for sea life in the real world. However, without connecting the shrimp industry to the lower waters, it doesn’t weaken the argument.
C. This weakens the argument. It doesn’t matter if the shrimp aren’t bothered by extra salt if they have no food to eat.
D. This strengthens the argument. More shrimp would be good for the shrimp industry.
E. Irrelevant. This is a general statement, not relevant to our particular argument.
Best answer is C.

Which of the following statements, if true, would weaken the argument above?

Given: increased concentration of salt caused by drought and high temp, will cause many fish to die.but shrimp can endure high level of salts.

Conclusion : shrimp industry will not be hurt by the increased conc of salts.

If the food that keeps shrimp alive is affected by the salty water then shrimp will not survive.industries based on ashrimps will be affected

A. Some fish will migrate to areas that have lower concentrations of salt.(strengthener)
B. Lack of rainfall for extended periods of time lowers the water level of bays.(strengthener)
C. The organisms on which young shrimp feed cannot survive in such salty waters. (Weakner)
D. Increased water temperature often causes shrimp to multiply more quickly.(strengthener)
E. Shrimp are more abundant in areas of the bay that are sparsely populated by fish.(strengthener)

Choice C is correct.
