From the argument we can see that the first boldface is a finding – i.e. some million years ago an asteroid hit the Earth. And the author concludes that exactly this asteroid caused the mass extinction. The second is probably offered as a consideration that supports the conclusion because if indeed other asteroids didn’t cause the mass extinction than the first mentioned one must have caused it. So the correct answer is E.

A. The first and the second each describe evidence that has been used to challenge the position that the argument seeks to establish.

Two boldfaces are not evidences

B. The first and the second each describe evidence that has been used to support the position that the argument seeks to establish.

Two boldfaces are not evidences

C. The first is a circumstance whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is the main conclusion of the argument.

the second isn’t the main conclusion

D. The first is a finding whose accuracy is evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to establish that the finding is accurate.

the accuracy of the first isn’t evaluated

E. The first is a finding whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the conclusion that the argument seeks to establish.

what I described above

So E

One of the most intriguing topics for geologists has long been what happened 66 million years ago, after a 7.5-mile-wide asteroid crashed into the ocean near what’s now the port town of Chicxulub, Mexico. The impact brought the age of dinosaurs to an abrupt end, wiping out about three-quarters of all life on Earth. This mass extinction happened because the space rock slammed into an oily tinderbox, blasting enough soot into the atmosphere to cause extreme global cooling. Other big asteroids have hit Earth but they caused no mass extinctions as far as the fossil record shows—probably because those impact sites just didn’t have the right mix of volatile rocks.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first and the second each describe evidence that has been used to challenge the position that the argument seeks to establish.
The paragraph is not challenging any position in the argument but simply establishing a claim therefore out

B. The first and the second each describe evidence that has been used to support the position that the argument seeks to establish.
These are even though evidences they don't in particular support any argument

C. The first is a circumstance whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is the main conclusion of the argument.
The second isn't the main conclusion hence out

D. The first is a finding whose accuracy is evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to establish that the finding is accurate.
Accuracy is not eveluvated but rather the implication or the impact is lokked after therefore out

E. The first is a finding whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the conclusion that the argument seeks to establish.
This is the intended meaning and is establishing the argument that the first crash was the reason for the extinction of dinosaurs

Therefore IMO E

None of them is challenging the argument

B. The first and the second each describe evidence that has been used to support the position that the argument seeks to establish.
Close call. They do support the conclusion in some way. Only thing is the first bold face may not be directly doing the work.
Let us keep it for sometime.

C. The first is a circumstance whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is the main conclusion of the argument.
Second is surely not the conclusion

D. The first is a finding whose accuracy is evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to establish that the finding is accurate.
Second bold face does not have anything to do with the first boldface. But it is to to support the conclusion.
Similarly, we do not evaluate the accuracy of the first bold face but it’s implications.

E. The first is a finding whose implications are evaluated in the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the conclusion that the argument seeks to establish.
CORRECT

Hmm, I think whoever produced this has a shaky sense of GMAT CR. They are expecting us to address a conclusion that is never stated, as indicated in the explanation by the language "Main conclusion (implicit)." That isn't how the GMAT works. When we're assessing an argument, the conclusion has to be something that is stated directly. If no conclusion is stated, then the thing we're reading is not an argument. Toss this one out!
