20 or 30 years ago when the GMAT was updated from its paper to the computer format, what are used to have two essays. Then about 10 years ago one of the essays was removed and switched to the wonderful integrated reasoning. I’m not sure that was a good thing. 🤷♂️
Originally, there used to be chew types of essays. Analysis of an argument and Analysis of an issue. Please serve two purposes. One, it was supposed to evaluate your critical thinking. Two, it was supposed to provide the admissions team with an example of your writing style to discourage you from potentially submitting essays written by someone else completely. I guess there was perhaps a third goal of evaluating your written communication abilities.
Ultimately, it’s kind of hard to evaluate essays and saw a computer-based reader was adopted. Originally two people read the essays and then provided the score that was sort of an average of the two and today supposedly there’s still a human reading the essays and then instead of the second person, there is a computer.
Fast forward to today, most business schools realize that writing an essay in 30 minutes at the test center is going to be very different than spending a month. Therefore, the purpose of matching the writing style is really lost. Moreover, is the schools used to ask for multiple essays. At least two that used to be fairly long. Today they only ask for a fairly short one. As a result, the business school essays play Elissa role these days and then a little writing assessment even less.
We have asked a number of admissions directors point blank about their opinion on a W a and I R. They basically said they did not care about either unless the score was very low and in that case it would attract attention and they would want to know why. Asas long as you can avoid getting a very little score, you should be just fine. I would say that the very little score is anything below 3 1/2 or perhaps four.
However, you should not be able to get anything less than a five or 5 1/2 if you use our one day guide to getting six pointer on AWA. This guy tells you exactly how to write the essay and how to get a high score from both human and the computer reader. It’s very straightforward and it only takes one day. It also happens to be the highest rated topic on GMAT Club. 🤩
