The graph displays experimental data relating the surface area of a snow shovel’s blade, in hundreds of square centimeters (100 \(cm^2\)), to the time to fatigue: the minimum number of hours of snow shoveling until a healthy adult feels too fatigued to continue. The line shown is a trendline corresponding to the data.

Dropdown 1:

1,000 cm^2 corresponds to 10 on the x-axis, since the x-axis is measured in 100s of square centimeters.

The data point farthest from the trendline is the low point at x = 8, with time to fatigue approximately 0.3 hours.

So the correct selections are:

i looked at the trendline for the second part...and got the question wrong?

is it a general rule that we only get data from the trendline only when they ask you to?

The data point for which the distance to the trendline is greatest corresponds to a time to fatigue that is approximately ... hours.

The question clearly asks for the data point whose distance from the trendline is greatest.

So the trendline is used only to identify which point is farthest from it. After that, we need the time to fatigue of that actual data point, not the time shown by the trendline.

Hi Sa800,

Good instinct to pause on this, because the two dropdowns are quietly asking for two different things, and that's the whole trap here.

Look at the exact words in each stem:

- Dropdown 1: "According to the trendline..." - it tells you to read the line. So at x = 10 you slide up to the line and read ~1.2 hours. Correct to use the trendline.
- Dropdown 2: "The data point for which the distance to the trendline is greatest..." - it's asking about an actual blue dot, not a value on the line.

So for the second one, the line is only a reference for measuring distance. The answer you report is the y-value of the dot itself. The dot that sits farthest from the line is the low outlier at about (8, 0.3) - its vertical gap to the line (~1.3 on the line vs. 0.3 for the dot) is about 1.0 hour, bigger than any other point. That's why 0.3 is correct.

On your general-rule question: it's not "only use the trendline when asked." The real rule is simpler - read literally what the stem names. If it says trendline, read off the line; if it says data point, read the dot. The graph gives you both, and each question tells you which one it wants.

Quick rehearsal: imagine a dot at (5, 1.9) while the trendline at x = 5 sits at 1.5.
- "According to the trendline at x = 5" - answer 1.5.
- "The data point at x = 5" - answer 1.9.

Same picture, different number - driven entirely by the noun in the sentence. Lock onto that noun first, then read.

Answer: 1.2
