let c be the cost of the computer

1.4c = 2240
c = 1600

1.5c = 1600(1.5)
1.5c = 2400 (the price that would yield a 50% profit for the computer)

Letting C = the store’s cost for the computer, we can create the equation:

2240 - C = 0.4C

2240 = 1.4C

1600 = C

So for a profit of 50%:

R - 1600 = 0.5 x 1600

R - 1600 = 800

R = 2400

LET: THE CP = x

PROFIT% = SP-CP/CP * 100
40 = 2240-x/x * 100
on solving : x = 1600 = CP

NOW, 50 = SP-1600/1600 * 100
on solving : SP = 2400$ ... ans A

One potential way to do this is to note $2240, the sales price, is basically 1.4 times the cost of the computer. In algebra, let's say that is 1.4c

We're asked then in a sense to figure out what 1.5c would be.

Let's first increase 1.4c and its equivalent dollar amount by 10%

1.40c + 0.14c = $2240 + $224
1.54c = $2464

Because we're looking for 1.5c, the answer has to be a bit lower than this dollar value.

The only one that could possibly work is (A)
