Hello, I understand that we are supposed to choose the best option possible, but just out of curiosity, doesn't the present tense in option D change the meaning a little bit since the original sentence is in the past? Thank you.

Can anyone explain in a simpler way? Why "was well known/famous" is correct and "is quite famous" right?

If you look at the very first part of the sentence "Mohammed Ali is a former American boxer", it says Mohammad Ali IS. Saying that he "was well known" would either indicate that he is dead, contradicting the sentence or implying that he is no longer famous.

Mohammed Ali is a former American boxer and three-time World Heavyweight
Champion who, as it can be said, was well known for his fighting style described as
“float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”

POE:
Eliminate (A), (C) - 'was' is wrong. We are using the present tense in the non-underlined part.
Eliminate (E) - 'being' is redundant on gmat.
Down to two (B) &(D)
Eliminate (B) - wordy
(D) is more clear and simple

a) as it can be said, was well known
b) coincidently, is to be well known
c) as it is a fact, was quite famous
d) incidentally, is quite well known - CORRECT
e) being a true fact, is heralded

How is option D correct? 'Incidentally' implies that Ali being well known is NOT related to first part of the sentence. If we choose incidentally, it changes the meaning. The original sentence implies that he is a champion and hence is well known
