Hello Guys,
Gave my GMAT today and got a Q-49 and V-35 overall score of 700
Sorry for my long post , but I feel that my experience will help fellow aspirants who are low on confidence..
I have an engineering background and work as a procurement analyst in the oil and gas consulting industry
Basically, I am a non-native english speaker .. I would like to post my experiences to help all fellow GMAT aspirants who have difficulties in their preparation.
I started my preparations in mid May and scheduled to take my GMAT exam on aug 13. As a non-native english speaker I straight away found that I was very bad at verbal.. Read through several GMAT club blogs and posts to find the best materials for my verbal preparation. After researching I bought these books :
SC- Manhattan SC guide
RC - Power Score CR bible
Though, I bought these books I never really started preparing for my exam. I did not prepare any schedule for my preparation , I just randomly read through the books whenever I had time. By early July , I realized that I was not preparing well enough to get a target score of 700 . So, I started preparing a little seriously in the month of July.. By early August, 10 days before my exam, I gave 2 Manhattan CAT tests and scored miserably
MGMAT test 1 - 530
MGMAT test 2- 540
I realized that I would screw my actual GMAT exam and hence,re-scheduled my exam to sep 23.
I had 9 weeks prep time till my exam on sep 23.
I worked hard on my verbal and I could find that my hit rate had improved in SC from 50-60% to 70-80%
But, I was very bad in CR and I did not do any RC practice questions till then.
Gave a read of the entire CR bible and took brief notes on how to approach each question type.
Then I practiced all OG CR questions and got a decent hit rate
he biggest mistake I made in my GMAT prep was that I did not prepare a schedule , I just randomly read SC and CR that I totally ignored RC and Quants. Because of my engineering background I though that I would do well in quants . Unfortunately, I was proved wrong when I took my third
MGMAT CAT test, I got a score of 530 V-30 and Q-35 .. I had only 2 weeks left for my exam and was back to square one again. My situation 3 weeks before the exam was
Quants : No prep at all
SC : had a decent rate of 70-80%
CR : had a rate of 60-70 %
RC : No prep at all
I realized that I was very short in terms of my preparation and was planning to reschedule my exam again, but decided against it and started preparing 4-5 hours a day after work ,i.e. I prepared from 9pm - 1am everyday continuously on weekdays and 7-8 hours a day on weekends. Since my Verbal rate was decent enough I decided not to prepare verbal anymore and planned to concentrate only on quants. Many suggested me that
MGMAT math quants were the best material around, but as I did not have enough time to prepare
MGMAT quants books and practice
MGMAT questions, I downloaded the GMAT MATH prep pdf from GMAT club. Honestly, this was a real life saver for me. I read through the entire book in 3-4 days and started doing OG questions. By then, I had only 3-4 days to go for my exam. I then did not prepare for another 2 days since I had too much pressure at office and I had to leave office only by 11 pm .
2 days to D-day, I downloaded the GMAT prep software and gave my first GMAT Prep test . I scored 610 Q-43 and V-31
Was shocked to see the score. Honestly, I thought that I had prepared well enough in Quants. Nevertheless, I reviewed each and every question in quants and found that I had got 10-12 questions in DS wrong( I did not practice even a single DS question) and only 3-4 PS wrong. All the DS mistakes I made were silly though I knew how to approach them
1 day to go, I gave my GMAT PREP 2. I thought that I'd get a score above 610 because I got a hang of the questions where I answered wrongly. Again, I got a disappointing score of 590 Q-43 V-29 . I realized that in my second test, I got 10 RC questions wrong( randomly guessed 6 RC questions as I had no time) and that my verbal score hinges on how well I do my Rc's.
I was very down and dint know what to do with 24 hrs to go .. I then reviewed each and every question in my GMAT prep and got mentally prepared . I was almost sure that I needed to take the test a second time. The night before the exam I Reviewed all DS questions in GMAT prep and 700-level questions from GMAT club Quant forum .
I got mentally prepared that I have to concentrate more on DS in quants and on RC's in verbal .. Hence, decided to complete PS, SC's and CR's as fast as I could...
Test Day :
AWA- did reasonably well
IR : Got 8-9 questions right
Quants : Got very hard questions from the outset . I felt that the difficulty level in quants was way higher than what I ever came across. As the test progressed the difficulty of the questions got worse. However, was able to finish all the question on time and got a good feeling that I'd get somewhere around 46-47 in Quant
Verbal : I was good in SC and CR ,so I answered these questions as fast as I could so that I could give more time for my RC's(my weakness) .
Finally, because of my GMAT Prep scores I felt that I'd get only 630-640 because many GMAT clubers suggest that the GMAT prep gives an actual indication of where we stand.
Then, the score appeared 700 Q-49 and V-35 ...
Mistakes in my prep :
No scheduled preparation
Overconfidence in Quants
No practice tests until 2 days before my exam .
Advise : Never get disheartened. Don't lose hope .. GMAT is just an exam ...
Work on your weaknesses and develop your strengths..
NEVER GIVE UP !!!!!
