Each person in a certain group supports only one of two candidates R and T. Of the people in the group, 45 percent support Candidate R and the rest support Candidate T. How many people in the group are in favor of a flat tax ?

(1) Of the people in the group who support Candidate R, 58 percent are in favor of flat tax

(2) Of the people in the group who support Candidate T, 22 are in favor of a flat tax.

My question is regarding statement 2. If we were given that it was 22 percent instead of the number 22, then the 2 statements combined will be sufficient ( answer choice C) is this correct?

Notice that we are asked to find  the number of people  (not percentage) in the group who are in favor of a flat tax.

When we consider the statements together we have that in favor of flat tax are 58% of 45% of total + 22 people. We need to know the number of people in the group.

Answer E.

As for your question: the answer would still be E for the same reason.

Since we agree that A,B and D are eliminated, let's discuss only about C.

Look at statement 1) , it only mentions about 58% of the 45% of the Total group. Still we dont know what's the strength of total group.
Statement 2) gives the 22 in group T supports Flat tax, i.e, 22 in 55% of the Total group. But we dont know 22 is what percent of the 55%. 
It's possible that all the people in group T support Flat tax, i.e 55% of Total group = 22 or just 1% in the 55% support flat tax.

Because of this the answer is E.

Not sure why we can't solve as below -

Of the people in the group who support Candidate R, 58 percent are in favor of a flat tax - 45*58% = 26.1 = 26 people.
Similarly, solve for 2nd statement.

Combined we get the answer to what is asked in the stem.

The answer however is E.

Please help.

You incorrectly converted the product of two percentages into a known whole number.

You actually have  45% X 58% = 0.45 X 0.58 = 0.261 = 26.1%   This is  not  equal to 26.1 people.

We have to be able to calculate an actual number to answer the question. The answer is E since, even after combining the two statements, we can only obtain a percentage and not an actual number.

got this question wrong in my mock- choose B.

From in here what i understand is

st 1 only gives percentage of people in group who Support R- 45%*58%=26.1% (no info on actual number who support flat tax or even the number of people in the group)

st 2 gives us that 22 people in support of T are in favor of flat tax.

info from question is 55% of x members in total group support t and rest(45%) support R

we are not given anywhere total number of members in both groups or in individual groups. hence ans E
