Past perfect ‘had quadrupled’ cannot be used because there are no events whose timelines are under comparison

Hello jia525

If answer is A or B then it will be mean that "number of cars" increased 4 times (for example in 1983, 1984 , 1986 and 1987 years).
It will be about quantity of increases not about how greater number of cars became.

Please explain why A or B is wrong and C is right?

E was straight out because of the use of had. D and C were out as I preferred the use of four times to quadrupled.

Is there any change in meaning that I am missing here?

John has seen the movie more than four times.
Conveyed meaning:
On at least five separate occasions, John has seen the movie.

The number of cars increased more than four times.
Conveyed meaning:
On at least five separate occasions, the number of cars increased.
Not the intended meaning.

The intended meaning is that the number of cars produced in 1987 was more than four times the number of cars produced in 1982.
In other words, the number of cars increased by a factor greater than four.
This meaning is conveyed by C:
The number of cars more than QUADRUPLED.
