Revised GMAT Percentile Ranking Tables July 1st 2014

Question

Hi Everyone,
I just saw revised percentile ranking tables for all the sections of GMAT Test on their Official Website

Good News is that the mean value for verbal section just fell down a little bit, which will give slight advantage to those who are not good in verbal section. Bad News is that the mean value for the Quantitative section just went up, which will be slight disadvantage for all of the students. Overall Mean value of the test also went up from 545.6 to 547.35 which is again a disadvantage to all the students. I don't want to discuss complete reasoning behind this but keep this thing in mind that the standards of GMAT test takers went up so you have to perform well too.

I hope someone else will elaborate this for all..and Please consider giving 'kudos' if you liked this updated info

(you can see the comparison of percentiles from back in 2011, 2012, and 2013). Verbal mean keeps dropping - it was 27.9 in 2011.
Quant mean keeps rising - it was 36.2 in 2011.
The overall score has also gone up from 540 to 547

i just took the exam today and scored 710 (Q48 V40), it seems that if i had taken it a week ago i would've had 720

It does not mean a whole lot... every year the percentiles change and move around a bit.
What it does is show the idea of the audiences and where the shift is happening (more internetaional applicants taking the GMAT and thus pushing the Verbal down while skewing the quant up).

The usual cut offs that the top 10 are looking is 80th percentile for Q and V. 
That means that now you have to get 49 for Q - that's really high.

For example when I got my Q49 in 2002 (really really long time ago), it was 92nd percentile. Today it is 79th. 
My 750 was also a 99th percentile. Today it is 98th.

There is some score inflation that is happening. It is not huge over a few years but it is massive over a decade. Again, not a big impact on you, so don't worry too much about it.

Congrats on the score but that's actually an incorrect thinking. 
The percentiles have nothing to do with your overall score - the score a year ago is the same score today. The only difference that may happen is that your percentile will change (like mine did with 750 being a 98th percentile now).

The overall score (710) is independent of the section scores (48, 40). They are determined independently using different algorithms (not sure why really - have no good reasons) and that's why sometimes you may have the same raw scores but a different overall score. My guess is that because the scores are multiples of 10 Hope this helps....

I remember people getting 750 and 760 both with a Q50 V42.

Wow. The difference between Q49 and Q50 is massive ! Normally a Q49 to Q50 would only get you a 10 point increase in the total score (assuming total score is above 660). Looking at the percentile skew, I believe that the effort taken to improve oneself from Q48/49 to Q50 can be better utilized in verbal ! Total score can zoom much more if you put all of that quant effort in verbal !

I think the scale needs to change with a higher range of points. This would hopefully reduce the percentile gap between a single point in a section such as Quant/Verbal.

The scaled score percentiles actually do not have any bearing on the overall score percentile. The difference between Q49 and Q50 is still about 10 points (20 at most).

I think GMAC may want to re-think the quant section of the test or the overall scoring. I scored a 750 Q47, V47 and now have a Quant score that is in the 68th percentile, but a test score that is in the 98th percentile - though I have a perfect split in the raw test numbers.

I've put my applications in and definitely don't feel very good about them at this point anymore. Crazy that a 750 is not good enough.

hi guys,
I took the gmat last week and achieved 36 quantitative questions. on my unofficial score Report i have a score of 36 for the quantitative section, but only a 36 percentile. there was a total of 37 quantitative questions. Can someone explain please?

Hi johnsmithwien,

Your Official Score report will contain a number of different pieces of information, including a Scaled Score for each section and a Percentile for each section, as well as an OVERALL score and OVERALL percentile.

When you mentioned the "36" that you scored in the Quant section, that does NOT mean the number of questions that you got correct.

If the 36 is the Scaled Score, then that is a reference to how well you performed relative to the TEST.
If the 36 is the Percentile, then that is a reference to how well you performed relative to OTHER TEST-TAKERS.

These days, a 36 Scaled Score could very well be the 36th percentile, but that's just one spot on the Bell Curve.

To raise your Overall score, you have to raise your Scaled Scores.
