I just finished my first go at the GMAT… 700 q47 v40 6 IR. I guess I’ll be waiting on the AWA for a hot minute, but I doubt it’ll be bad enough to take away from my major high at the moment.
I’ve benefited greatly from the debriefs and the input of everyone on this forum, so I hope this post is at least a little bit of a repayment for all I’ve received.
I have no background in quant, and was a history major in college.
I studied for about 2.5 months prior to the test, and slacked off the last half-month or so of that. I plan to study from the beginning again and retest in June. I think 2 months is about perfect for ramping up to the test.
Study Materials
I’ve used primarily the OG,
Manhattan GMAT, and
Magoosh supplies while studying. I also recently purchased some of the GMATPrep additional questions and tests, but haven’t had much of an opportunity to work with them.
I used the
Manhattan GMAT Live Online class, and it was honestly the best thing I could have done for setting a study schedule. If anyone has difficulty with procrastination as I do, I highly recommend it. Having a weekly class in which we were assigned homework and cold-called for answers during class made me ensure I understood the material in a timely manner. It’s easy to put studying off until later, but the class kept me honest.
Magoosh was great for quant questions, and at $99 for the whole program it’s a steal. I wouldn’t recommend using the verbal questions. Chances are, they’ll simply confuse you. Stick to the OG.
Magoosh includes with their program a number of videos that you can watch on any area you need to improve.
The
Manhattan GMAT books are great, especially for people like me who don’t have a solid quant background. It breaks every concept down both algebraically and in a common sense manner that’s easy to understand.
The OG’s are obvious. You need them. Buy them. Use them, especially for verbal. I don’t do verbal questions that aren’t from the OG or Manhattan, and I honestly don’t like to use the Manhattan verbal questions.
Not to try and sell
MGMAT any harder, but they keep a log of your OG questions that helps find weak spots in your studying.

MGMATIf I could have done one thing differently, I would have taken more practice tests. Always do the entire test, to include AWA and IR. You need to have the mental stamina built up for the real deal.
Manhattan GMAT tests are much, much harder than the actual GMAT in my opinion, and the scores prove it. However, they’ll keep your ego in check and make sure you know what you have to in order to get results come test day. Just don’t let them get you down.
Test Day
Test day I woke up later than usual, ate a good breakfast with lots of protein, picked up drinks, bananas and protein bars, and drove off to the test center to arrive an hour early. The test personnel were friendly and professional, and I was seated a half-hour before my scheduled time. The locker provided enough room for all my snacks, but I do wish I had left my phone in the car.
During the test, I thought I was doing pretty miserably. By the time I was done with quant, I didn’t want to finish verbal. I raced through verbal since I thought I had done so badly on quant, and finished with about 15 minutes left. When I clicked through all the annoying demographics questions the GMAC losers put prior to your score, I finally saw it… 700! 700 club now, woot woot! I could hardly believe it. All the hard work had finally paid off. I knew, though, I could do better, so tomorrow starts studying part deux.
Sorry if there are any typos in all this, my brain is still pretty fried. Best of luck with your studies, and if there’s anything I can do to help, please PM me. I’ll be sure to update following my second try in a couple months!
UPDATE: 4/16/2015 I received my AWA score over last weekend... 6! I followed the format posted by one awesome individual on this site (can't remember the exact name of the post but I know it's a sticky) and I did much better than I thought I would. I'm still happy with my score, but the more I look back on it the more I wish I had spent more time on verbal. We'll see how the second try goes, and I'll post another update afterwards!
UPDATE 6/13/15: second try today. 710 q43 v44 IR8. I'm a little disappointed. If I had maintained my quant I'd be in the 740 area. Now comes the decision to say "good enough" or try again.
