The preservation of animal and plant life, and of the general beauty of Nature, is one of the foremost duties of the men and women of today. It is an imperative duty, because it must be performed at once, for otherwise it will be too late. Every possible means of preservation — sentimental, educational and legislative—must be employed.

We no longer destroy great works of art. They are treasured and regarded as priceless; however we have yet to attain the state of civilization where the destruction of a glorious work of Nature, whether it be a cliff, a forest, or a species of mammal or bird, is regarded with equal abhorrence. The whole earth is a poorer place to live in when a colony of exquisite egrets or birds of paradise is destroyed in order that the plumes may decorate the hat of some lady of fashion, and ultimately find their way into the rubbish heap.

Travels through Europe, as well as over a large part of the North American continent, have convinced me that nowhere is Nature being destroyed so rapidly as in the United States. Except within our conservation areas, an earthly paradise is being turned into an earthly  Hades  and it is not savages or primitive men who are doing this, but men and women who boast of their civilization. Air and water are polluted, rivers and streams serve as sewers and dumping grounds, forests are swept away and fishes are driven from the streams. Many birds are becoming extinct, and certain mammals are on the verge of extermination. Vulgar advertisements hide the landscape and in all that disfigures the wonderful heritage of the beauty of nature to-day, we Americans are in the lead.

Fortunately the tide of destruction is ebbing and the tide of conservation is coming in.Americans are practical. Like all other Northern people, they love money and will sacrifice much for it, but they are also full of idealism, as well as of moral and spiritual energy. The influence of the splendid body of Americans and Canadians, who have turned their best forces of mind and language into literature and into political power for the conservation movement, is becoming stronger every day. Yet we are far from the point where the momentum of conservation is strong enough to arrest and roll back the tide of destruction and this is especially true with regard to our fast vanishing animal life.   1

p1: to state argument for conservation
p2: to argue by analogy
p3: to state that the US is the worst offender + provide examples
p4: to state some progress has been made, but more needs to happen.

Q1 is fairly tight and I don't know that OG type questions would be like this.
Answer choice (D) is incorrect because p3 states that "certain mammals are on the verge of extermination", (extermination = synonym for extinction)
E is correct because it is stated that "vulgar ads hide the landscape" quite clearly in p3.

Q2 - again, I don't know if its a language issue here, but Hades is the God of Hell, so to a native english speaker, "an earthly paradise...turned into an earthly Hades" does sound weird, but it's synonymous with the expression "living hell", and all the other answer choices don't make sense, so (B) is correct.

Q3 - The first para functions to give the main purpose, quite clearly in fact. - A

Q4 - my poor geography led me to (A) even though I see why (C) is the answer.
A is incorrect because it is the "United States", not "North America" as a whole, which suffers from the worst environmental degradation.

Hello dcummins This is probably my first ever tag for you

I fell for question 4 too and marked A. Passage says "Travels through Europe, as well as over a large part of the North American continent, have convinced me that nowhere is Nature being destroyed so rapidly as in the United States". So I would say I am okay to an extent with answer choice A mentioning North America but I am not okay with "degradation is worst" because it looks like author is saying destruction is rapid not necessarily worst. Regardless, we both agree C is a better option. Thank you!

but in case of D it is clearly written certain animals are on verge of extinction.
from this we cannot conclude that several animals are ,also it is saying on verge not already extinct.
so option D is right

u can easily elimate other option .if we talk about A AND C .
a is a shell game taling about north america and we can direclty conclude fromthe passage it is C

Question 4 option A needs to be properly phrased, its very easy to get confused since North America and United States essentially mean the same thing, i think the option was supposed to be "Northern America", then it would have better.
