Company A has x mailing lists and Company B has y mailing lists. If the total mailing lists’ number combined Company A and Company B is equal to 3 times the mailing lists’ number of Company A, what is the number of mailing lists that both Company A and Company B have, in terms of x and y?
A. 2x-y
B. y-2x
C. 3x+y
D. y+2x
E. y-3x
\(?\,\, = {\rm{both}}\,\,\, = \,\,\,f\left( {x,y} \right)\)

\(x + y - {\rm{both}} = 3x\,\,\,\,\,\,\left[ {\,{\rm{simplifier}}\,} \right]\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\, \Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,?\,\, = \,\,y - 2x\,\,\,\,\,\)

This solution follows the notations and rationale taught in the GMATH method.

Regards,
Fabio.

Hi MathRevolution

The sentence "If the total mailing lists’ number combined Company A and Company B is equal to 3 times the mailing lists’ number of Company A" was quite ambiguous for me.
After giving it some thought, I understood the answer, but I'm not sure I wont repeat my mistake.
Could you please tell me where I got wrong if I read it as X+Y=3X?

Thank you!

I apologize, I’m finding it difficult to understand what the question is trying to say....

Only after looking at a response was I able to understand what was written.

Hello ,
mailing lists that both Company A and Company B have let be Z
Then Only A =X-Z
Only B = Y-Z
given that combined A and B is 3 times A
X-Z+Z+Y-Z=3X
Z=Y-2X
Hence Option B is correct
