Divyadisha - ok this one has me in doldrums. how is D parallel? how is 'written' and 'inspirattion' parallel?? shouldnt the second word be something in past participle to be parallel? so option D sounds like this - the first broadway musical written by... - which is correct
the first broadway musical the inspiration... - how is this correct?

Would appreciate an early response!

Thanks,
Jon

I think the first musical broadway and the inspiration is are refer to Meet Pauline, hence the correct answer is D

To the distress of fans of musical theater, the producers are closing Meet Pauline, the first Broadway musical that had been written by a large group of composers and the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after.

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was
(D) written by a large group of composers and
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was

Please explain why B is wrong?

Thanks

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and ->past perfect is not required, simple past is required
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was -> not parallel
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was -> not parallel
(D) written by a large group of composers and -> correct
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was->not parallel

Very good question
Basically everything after comma is a modifier.
The two modifiers have to be parallel and should refer back to Meet Pauline.
D only makes sense rest options are of no good.

Please do not fail to take note of the non-underlined part. The noun 'Meet Pauline' is modified by two appositives namely the first musical and the inspiration (both nouns).
A very good question by techie and very good answer by Arvind

[the first Broadway musical written by a large group of composers] and [the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after].

Please tell me how are this two clauses parallel...

First: [the first Broadway musical written by a large group of composers] and [the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after] are NOT clauses, but noun phrases. The main nouns in the phrases are:
1. the first Broadway Musical
2. the inspiration

Second: Two noun phrases can be parallel. Moroever, even they were two clauses as you thought, that would also be fine - two clauses can also be parallel.

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and - that had been written and the inspiration is not parallel
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was - and which was .. looks like which is modifying composers ..
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was - changes the meaning - to be written
(D) written by a large group of composers and - looks good
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was - same as C
