I think it should be C. A and B are out as comparison of number with city.E is ambiguous

B out - Mumbai is only one city so it should has one number (a number of)

Took 60 Sec for the correct option and its C.

Residences are compared to city which is illogical here.

(B) greater numbers of residences per square kilometer than any other Indian city.
"Numbers of" is wrong here and unidiomatic. Also comparison is not correct with city.

(C) a greater number of residences per square kilometer than does any other Indian city.
Is the correct option as Mumbai is compared to the other city and all idioms are correct here.

(D) greater numbers of residences per square kilometer than do other Indian cities.
"Numbers of" is wrong here and unidiomatic. Also comparison is not correct with city.

(E) a great per square kilometer number of residences, more than does any other Indian city.
Illogical starting of the sentence using "a great per square kilometer number of residences".

POE suits best strategy for this Question as Options A,B,D and E are easily eliminated.

Regarding 'C'
I beg to differ; only an action verb require parallel action verb in the second part of the comparison. " has' is not an action verb; it is a linking verb.

At best, a linking verb such as 'has' may be an option in the given case, but such a choice is not there.
But certainly an action verb such as 'does' is out of place.

Thinking about it, can we see any city doing anything to have more residences in a given area?

I would vote A.

First of All It boil down to Option A and C,
Numbers i incorrect, Number is correct :
only A, C has that option

2: Option A Is not correct as it makes comparison error.
Option C is also not correct as it uses Does,
Just evaluate the meaning in C, It seems other Indian cities, develop the residencies / square kilometer or they have their own residencies. Does is performing action of residency.
residences
if option A uses " IN " or C use i/o does , that option could be correct.

Doubt, what's the Source for this
