A laborer is paid $8 per hour for an 8-hour day and 3/2 times that rate for each hour in excess of 8 hours in a single day. If the laborer received $80 for a single day's work, how long did he work on that day?

We are told that the laborer is paid $8 per hour for the first 8 hours.
As he is paid \(\frac{3}{2}\) the rate for the next few hours, he will get paid \(\frac{3}{2}*8 = $12\) for the remaining hours.
Since he is paid $80, the total number of hours can be calculated as follows
\($8*8 + $12*x = $80\) -> x = \(\frac{16}{12}\) -> x=\(\frac{4}{3} = 1\frac{1}{3}\) hours
Converting into minutes - 1 hour 20 minutes.
Therefore, the total time that the laborer works is 9 hour 20 minutes(Option B)

Normal wage = $8 per hour
Overtime wage = $8 *\(\frac{3}{2}\) = $12 per hour
The laborer received $80 for one day.
Normal day's pay: (8 hours * $8 per hr) = $64
Extra PAY for that day: $80 - $64 = $16
Normal day = 8 hours
Extra hours?
\(\frac{TotalAmountExtra}{AmountPerHour}\) = number of extra hours
\(\frac{$16}{$12} = \frac{4}{3} = 1\frac{1}{3}\) hours extra
Total HOURS? 8 + 1 = 9
MINUTES? Multiply any fraction of an hour to calculate minutes
\(\frac{1}{3} * 60 = 20\) minutes
Total time worked: 9 hours, 20 minutes
