Confused with option B and C
As the HR is not completed would the standard rate apply or the increased rate apply?

Would chose B

MT1988 , as soon as the laborer meets the condition that allows him to receive increased (not standard) pay, he receives the increased pay rate for the rest of that day.

The condition -- the event that raises his hourly wage for the rest of that day -- is not whether any single hour is over.

The condition is in the question.

Hope that helps. :-)

A laborer is paid $8 per hour for an 8-hour day and 3/2 times that rate for each hour in excess of 8 hours in a single day. If the laborer received $80 for a single day's work, how long did he work on that day?

(A) 6 hr. 40 min.

(B) 9 hr. 20 min.

(C) 9 hr. 30 min.

(D) 9 hr. 40 min.

(E) 10 hr.

We can create the following equation in which n = the number of hours worked and (n - 8) is the number of hours worked in excess of 8 hours:

80 = 8(8) + (8 x 3/2)(n - 8)

80 = 64 + 12(n - 8)

16 = 12n - 96
112 = 12n

112/12 = 28/3 = 9 1/3 hours = 9 hours and 20 minutes

Answer: B
