Hi everyone,
I always wanted to write this post some day since starting my GMAT preparation.
I can say that it is not easy for a non native English speaker with weak grammar to score well in verbal portion. It needed a lot of hard work. Quant was never a problem considering my engineering background.
It's been a long journey and hard work all along.
In the 1st attempt i was pretty sure to crack the 700 barrier. I prepared for 3 months with books borrowed from various friends. I studied for 2-3 hours daily. I took Manhattan test series and scored 650 ~ 680 regularly. Finally I sat for the GMAT and was surprised to see a score of 650 with 26 in verbal. I got 50 in Quant.
It was time to introspect on how to tackle the Verbal portion. I understood that I did not study in depth and I needed to understand the theories first and then apply them in the examples. I purchased all the necessary books and OG. Grasped the theories and then started doing examples. I was good at CR. So, I completed CR first and practised lots of questions from GMAT Club (700 types). Then I pushed for improvement in my weakest segment: SC. I first did all 600 level SCs topic wise and improved my accuracy level. Then went for 700 level questions in a similar manner. GMAT Club was a great source. Finally my SC accuracy level improved from 60% to 80% for 700 level questions. In the meantime, I continued practising CRs to keep the knowledge fresh. Once SC and CR was up to the mark (took approx 2 months), I started Quant and RC and practised for 1 more month. Simultaneously I started giving mock tested in the weekends. My scores improved and I was consistently scoring 700+. I prepared for AWA and IR only during the mocks.
Then I took the appointment for the GMAT after 7 days. Got a 730 this time (Q49, V40, AWA5, IR6).
My preparation consisted primarily of:
Books:
OG 2018
OG Verbal suppliment
Manhattan SC
Powerscore CR
Manhattan RC
Kaplan 800
and a lot of GMAT Club practice questions (no other forum)
Read a lot of motivational debriefs in GMAT Club
Mock Tests:
Manhattan 6 tests (Quant is unnecessarily tough and Verbal is somewhat easy than actual test)
Veritas Prep 6 tests (used only 3) (Quant is unnecessarily easy and Verbal is just like actual test)(690,710,700)
GMAT Prep tests (2 free test in 1st attempt and 2 new test (710,720) in the 2nd attempt) (Exact as actual test)
In the end I would say only perseverance and hard work helped me achieve my target.
Best,
S P Bose
