I think the given options are wrong.

Anyways,

Let the Fixed Cost be $X

X/36 = x/40 + 12

X(1/9-1/10) = 12*4

X = 12*4*9*10

X = 4320

Cost per person when 40 people charter - 4320/40 = 108

Answers - 4320, 108

Typo in Option A.

Cost to charter the plane is fixed.

36 people end up paying an extra $12 each because before this extra payment was being borne by 4 extra people (when there were 40 people)

So each person was paying 36*12/4 = $108
In that case, the cost to charter the plane is 108 * 40 = $4320

-----QUESTION A--------------
Let T = TOTAL price of charter
With 36 people, the price PER PERSON = T/36
With 40 people, the price PER PERSON = T/40

We're told that the price PER PERSON with 36 people is $12 greater than the price PER PERSON with 40 people.

In other words: price PER PERSON with 36 people is $12 MORE than the price PER PERSON with 40 people

Or: (price PER PERSON with 36 people) = (price PER PERSON with 40 people) + $12

Now we can write: T/36 = T/40 + 12 (solve for T)
To eliminate the fractions, multiply both sides by 360 to get: 10T = 9T + 4320
Solve: T = 4320

So, the TOTAL price of the charter = $4320

-----QUESTION B--------------
From above, we know that the TOTAL price of the charter = $4320
With 40 people, the price PER PERSON = T/40

So, the price PER PERSON = 4320/40 = $108

So, each person pays $108
------------------------

So, the answers are: A) $4320 and B) $108

Answer: A
