People in medieval times believed that lice were beneficial for their health, because there hardly used to be any lice on
people who were unwell. The reasoning was that the people got sick because the lice left. The real reason
however is that lice are extremely sensitive to body temperature. A small increase of body temperature, such as in
a fever, will make the lice look for another host.
If the above statements are all true, then what was wrong with the reasoning of people in medieval times about the

The problem with the thinking of the early Europeans was that they assumed that the absence of
lice was the cause and the disease was the effect whereas in fact disease was the cause and
absence of lice was the effect. Thus they mistook the cause for the effect. (D) states this best and is
the correct answer.
A. This still does not explain why the lice went away
B. The correlation is indeed a cause and effect relation; they just reversed the cause and the effect
C. The problem is never of representativeness
D. The correct answer
E. This argument is not one of necessary and sufficient conditions

Though I agree,as per med.people, absence of mice is a cause, disease cannot be the effect. Effect is 'UNWELL' state
Either DISEASE can be the cause for 'UNWELL' ( Effect ) or 'DISEASE' could have developed from something that in turn probably create effect.
So people think absence of nice (disease) is a cause for effect ( UNWELL).
Author states: Absence of mice is an effect & Rise in temperature is a cause(Disease).
I think issue is medival People 'Mistook Effect to be the Cause.& not the other way around.
My take on option A: since people reason that absence of mice is a cause that people are unwell- they assumed no other factor did affect people.
